The Beekeeping Program

Most participants come to the Beekeeper Program with interests in nature, and the environment as their strongest motivation. Some have been or are current beekeepers wishing to refine, update their skills. Some are completely new to the field and are primarily interested in learning about beekeeping. As a program offered through Colorado State University Cooperative Extension Boulder Country, the "Mission" is to develop knowledgeable, informed beekeeping "ambassadors" that can serve to help educate and inform the lager general community. In particular, bee disease problems have been endemic for many years — in large part due to the lack of information and education. However, the information and experience gained through the program is addressed to improving awareness of beekeeping issues in Boulder Country and Colorado.

The Beekeeping Program is offered through Colorado State University Cooperative Extension and in partnership with the Boulder County Beekeepers Association. Our initial program was offered during the fall of 1998. From comments and experience gained during this time, we are progressively modifying and developing the program, particularly the classroom instructional phase.

The need for regular instruction in beekeeping, both implied and actual, has been an issue of concern for many years in Boulder County. At long last, the Beekeeping Program was formed to address this need.
