Re: Public fear and pesticide marketing

"What do you think Rachel Carson would say?" Great question, Tom. Fear is hard to argue with. Throughout my lifetime I've heard it said countless times ... "If this new regulation (ingredient, lecture, medicine what-have-you) saves just a single life then it will have been worthwhile....

Re: Those of you still reading ...

Thanks for the check-ins, DavisChurches and Igmula1. I'm picturing Rachel Carson at her writing desk 50+ years ago and feeling touched by how her thoughts/words are still informing us – and our dear ones through us – today. Thank you for sharing so generously. I savored the first few chapters then c...

The Borgias

Does anyone have any insight into the "Borgias" reference in Chapter Eleven, "Beyond the Dreams of the Borgias?" I know who the Borgias were but am curious about the cultural reference. What would "Beyond the Dreams of the Borgias" meant to a 1960's audience?

Re: What Do You Think? On Pollen Stores and Brood Nest Place

Thanks for the interesting question, Bea. As long as the queen has laying space (and it sounds like she does) I would leave as-is this time of year. The bees know where they've stored their stuff and will move it around if necessary. It's normal for the brood nest to rise and fall in the brood chamb...

Silent Spring - Do you remember white pellets & spray?

Is anyone else horrified by the idea of white pellets raining from the sky as described in Chapter 7? Does anyone remember living through something like this?

It's hard to read some of these stories without feeling ill ...

Re: Silent Spring – Realms of the Soil

Thanks, Tom. These are interesting. Thinking "Realms of the Soil" may just be my favorite chapter in Silent Spring . Carson describes the soil life so vividly. I can see how reading for the first time in the 60's may have felt like an awakening. Living things began to work their creative m...
