Mason Bees for sale

I will have filled Mason Bee straws for sale at the BCBA February 6 meeting and maybe again in March if I have enough. They are $10 per straw, 3 for $25. Three straws should be enough to give you a good start. Mason Bees don't require nearly the commitment that honey bees do and are an excellent way...

Full line of equipment for small to medium beekeeping operation

I'm listing this equipment for my friend Harold Scherbenski. Harold has the longest standing beekeeping operation in Boulder County. This equipment will be good for a small to medium beekeeping operation and it is all in good condition. Harold wants to sell it all, not piece by piece. Call Harold di...

Mason Bees for sale

I've propagated Mason Bees (Blue Orchard Bees) in Boulder County for 25 or 30 years and have built my population to the point where I will have filled straws for sale. These will emerge about the last week of March and should be set out by the middle of March. I'm not sure yet of the exact number of...

Public fear and pesticide marketing

"United States pesticide makers appear to have tapped a sales bonanza in the increasing numbers of broad-scale pest elimination programs conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture," cheerfully reported one trade journal in 1958... Silent Spring, Chapter 10. There was an article in the...

Re: Silent Spring – Realms of the Soil

Here is a longer list of studies from Henk Tennekes' site. Not all deal directly with soil, but most do.

Re: Silent Spring – Realms of the Soil

The general consensus is that the neonics have a very damaging effect on a wide range of soil life-forms. Here is one study on the effect on earthworms: Earthworms are more susceptible to neonicotinoids than to other modern synthetic insecticides http://www.farmlandbirds.net/en/content/earthworms-ar...

Words

This is probably my third reading of Silent Spring, first when it was new, then about 10 or 12 years ago and now this time. What struck me in chapter 3, Elixirs of Death, is how little things have changed. With the change of just a few words, a few product names, Carson could have written this last ...

Re: Silent Spring – Chapter One: effective or manipulative?

It is both manipulative and effective. Most writing is manipulative in one way or another. Carson sets the scene and the context, then poses the question she proposes to answer. It;s not very subtle, but works for what she has in store.

Re: Silent Spring – What's your edition?

I just picked up a copy today (7-5) at Barnes and Noble in Boulder and it looks like it is a 2002 printing. It does have the pen and ink illustrations by the Darlings. For those of you who have this recent printing and want to refresh you memory of Rachel Carson, read page 379 first.
