Thanks for the images. Yes, it's possible for SHB to come in via package bees. I've alerted beekeepers on BCBA's email list to this thread & hopefully someone with SHB experience will chime in.

There's no need to paint or to use metal strips. Your frames will rest nicely against the unpainted wood which the bees will coat with propolis over time.

While we haven't used Urban Homesteading, extracting services like this are fairly common and worth checking out. It's a nice way to enjoy your first crop of honey without all the mess. Give them a try and let us know what you think.

Welcome to Boulder, Kelsey. There's not much in the way of commercial beekeeping happening here in Boulder County but there may be other opportunities to get involved in local agriculture. Check out the Boulder County Farmers' Market if you haven't already. They sometimes hire seasonal staff.
