SHB

I have 100% identified a SHB on the removable bottom board of one colony. This is the pull out board under the screen bottom board. This colony is a swarm I caught early Spring 2015. This hive sits alone, not in an apiary. They have been strong so far, and I treated them for mites in the Fall. I have been unable to open the hive due to the long period of very cold weather. How concerned should I be about this? Would this beetle have come from inside this hive since it was under the screen bottom? How low of temperatures can they tolerate? I have ordered a SHB trap but, of course, will be unable to install it with this weather. I live in Longmont, near Highway 66 and County Road 1. Any thoughts, advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,
First, you should go back through this forum (mid-July '15) to see the discussion of SHB. Second, since it was under the screen and you didn't notice anything over the summer, that beetle was probably trying to invade from somewhere else last fall. Hopefully. At the same time, though, it did come from somewhere, so there may be an infested hive within beetle flight distance - 3-5 miles. They spend the winter on the bees with the cluster, so temperature isn't an issue. Neither is food, as they tap on the bee's head just like another bee and they get fed. Clever, huh? Putting a beetle trap on in winter won't do much, but be on the lookout in spring.
Check-Mite (coumaphos) is the only in-hive chemical available. It's a hard chemical, accumulates in wax and has some serious side effects if you use it repeatedly. It also kills varroa. SHB larvae have to crawl out of the hive and pupate in the soil and this is a vulnerable point in their life cycle. You can put down old carpet, bottom side up, around and under your hive to foil them.
How did you identify your beetle? There are lots of similar beetles. Do you have a photo? Do you still have the beetle? I'll be up that way on Monday and could have a look.

Thanks Kristina! I do have the beetle, I identified it under the microscope comparing it to pictures online. I found a rather sizable (15), dead, clustered under the screen in a crevice today. I would love to have you look at the beetle and I will be around on Monday. I work in Boulder in the afternoon-1:30 on, and will be at home in Longmont in the morning. You can contact me directly at [email protected]. :D
