CSBA Summer Meeting 2019

Post by kristinahoney » Wed Apr 10, 2019 7:11 pm

The keynote speaker for our June 7-8-9 bee college in Rifle, Jonathan Lundgren, is a maverick former USDA scientist and whistleblower whose research-based opinions about sustainable farming, pesticides, and pollinators raised the ire of USDA bureaucrats. His first talk will focus on the relationship between modern farming practices, pesticides, and pollinators. The second provides practical solutions. Here are a few links to whet your appetite for his lectures.

Dr. Lundgren operates his nonprofit ECDYSIS Foundation on a shoestring, and right now he’s desperate for research nucs. I rounded up a few here on the Western Slope. Jon’s going to swing by and pick them up around May 1. You could chip in, too. If you have bees looking for a new home, and if you like tax deductions, and if you want to do some real good, give me a call at 970-984-0419, or email me at president@Coloradobeekeepers.org.
From Jonathan:
We will be using the nucs to support our research program. Traditional, siloed approaches to managing the symptoms associated with hive decline (pesticides, nutrition, varroa, disease, etc) have not effectively stemmed bee declines. We are focusing our solutions on holistic areas of the hive's biology that will simultaneously cure several symptoms, for example hormones, microbiome, and genetics. We also will be conducting a more comprehensive risk assessment of Dicamba against bees.

Jon

If you missed Paul Limbach’s 2017 bee college show-and-tell on American Foulbrood, European Foulbrood and chalk brood, breathe a sigh of relief. We roped him into doing it again. This is the most informative bee lecture ever. It happens June 8, in the bee yard. Bring your veil. Paul will also sit on the “Experts Panel” at the bee college. Is there something about bees you just can’t figure out on your own? Ask Paul and the panel. He cuts to the quick and makes it all sound easy.
CSBA has reserved a block of $115 rooms at the Holiday Inn in Silt, 1535 River Frontage Rd., conveniently close to Paul's farm. (970) 876-5100. On a tight budget? Camp for free at Colby Farm (RSVP president@Coloradobeekeepers.org), or shop around online.

Take care of your bees. Take heart. Life is neither bad, nor good. It’s what you make it
