We received notice to treat our two ash trees with systemic products to combat the recently discovered in N. Boulder Emerald Ash Borer - Merit soil injections or Tree Age truck injections. Please advise.

Thanks for the heads up. From whom did you receive the notice? A lawn care company? Your HOA? The city?

The county of Boulder and city of Erie has just been declared to be under quarantine due to the discovery of Emerald Ash Borer pest in the city of Boulder. (effective 11/12/13) According to the http://www.emeraldashborer.info/ site, Imidacloprid is THE go-to insecticide for controlling ash borer. It is a systemic insecticide which is to be applied as a drench at least once a year. City of Boulder has an estimated 98,000 ash trees and the Denver area 1.45 million trees.
Unless a big huge stink is made, I think that the amount of Imidacloprid poured onto our county and state are going to be huge. I hope that the Boulder County Beekeepers can be leaders in helping others to make other choices that insecticides to save the honeybees and native pollinators from the neonicitinoids. Suggestions for action?

Honeybee Keep and Living Systems Institute are educating the metro area about systemic poisons and requesting that the public refrain from using them. This effort is not directly related to the EAB issue, but helps. We are making an effort with real action. We encourage others to do what they can.
