Sawing the branch works best but placing a hive body with a bottom board attached (we strap ours together) directly under the branch and giving the branch a strong rap will often work just as well. The key to getting all the bees in the box is making sure you get...

Re: Do hive boxes need to be connected?
LOL. Strapping is unnecessary in in the spring and summer but can be helpful in especially gusty locations in the fall and winter. FWIW, Only one of the 10+ bee locations we've managed in Boulder County over many years has ever produced a blow-over. I'd leave the strapping off for now while the weat...

Re: Looking for queen cells
The ideal time for splits in this area is mid to late April depending on the weather. Swarm season gets going around the second week of May. We'll post the details for our next meeting when they're available. The BCBA typically meets every other month except for our two consecutive business meetings...

Thanks for your question. Beekeeping is not regulated within the city limits of Boulder though some HOA's do have their own restrictions. I recommend a neighborly approach: site your colonies with an eye toward minimizing their impact on neighbors; limit the number of colonies you're keeping; be pre...
