Hi, Robin. I'm assuming you're going to try again with new bees this spring. A strong colony should be able to fend off wasps just fine with the help of an entrance reducer. You'll want to use the entrance reducer in the late summer/fall which is when, as you've seen, wasps tend to go on the attack.
