Silent Spring – Favorite words

There are many. But looking at Chapter One alone I'd choose "vibernum" for the way it sounds and because I had to look it up. I'm enjoying Carson's way of describing an environment by listing its inhabitants.

In Chapter Two it's "sprays, dusts, and aerosols." The phrase has a softness to it. These are words we connect with cosmetics after all. But those sibilant "esses" lend a hint of the sinister. Brilliant.

Chapter 5:

"The chisels of frost and ice split and shattered the rocks."
