Entering your honey at the fair is fun and exciting! It takes a little bit of work, but it is worth it. I have shared some tips on what it takes to get an award-winning honey at the Boulder County Fair.
Here is what you need to know about entering your honey!!!
Division: 105 PANTRY STORE Check-in is Thursday July 31, 9:00 am – noon
- Read the fair rules and follow them.
- Get familiar with the Division 105 Honey rules. Read them again.
- Only enter your honey in a glass smooth sided one-pound jar. A smooth sided jar is smooth and does not have any indentations of Mason or Kerr to distort the judges view of the honey. No labels should be on the jar. Your information will be given to the superintendent at the time of check-in.
Smooth sided jars can be obtained from :https://www.uline.com

Queenline type jar looks like this and can be purchased from these sources.

https://www.mannlakeltd.com/honey-containers/traditional-queenline-glass- - Lids may have an inner seal but should be removed prior to bringing your honey to the show.
- Always bring extra lids, no honey should be on the lid, it must be clean.
One hint is to put saran wrap or equivalent under a lid to keep the lid clean. When you take the wrap off slowly the lid remains clean.
- The jars should be clean and there should be no fingerprints inside or outside. Clean new jars in hot soapy water and rinse thoroughly with hot water and drain on a rack. Do not dry with cotton cloth because it may leave lint.
Another hint about jars is to boil jars slightly in distilled water before filling them with honey then remove jar with a lint free cloth and invert to drain.
- Strain your honey a couple times through a sieve and not cloth because cloth may leave lint. You can heat your honey slightly to make it easier to strain but be cautious about burning the honey a judge can tell!
Hint-after the initial straining, a gold panning pan with a fine mesh screen is ideal and can be found in many hardware shops.
This is the best advice I can give you to bring home the best of the best.
Good Luck! You can do it!
